Exhaustion Series (2015-2018) by Sandy Williams IV

An example of research through creative practice through structures of collaboration, residency and transnational networks.

Exhaustion V featuring Beth Loughran

An ongoing collaboration that began during Sandy Williams IV’s residency at Institute of the Arts in 2017. Sandy was in the process of creating the Exhaustion Series (2015-2018), and after their introductory lecture, made a call out to IoA artists to collaborate. I responded and led by Sandy’s concept, we began to design the fifth film in the entire series through conversation around research interests and how those played out in artistic practice. In our case for this project it was film and dance and formulating expressions around lived experiences, roots and identity.

The whole series was exhibited at Cubed Luminous festival, Gulf Coast, Pensacola Museum of Art, 8-11th November 2018. The films can be viewed here https://www.sandywilliamsiv.com/exhaustion

With a professional and academic background in dance and performance, my interests lie in creative practice as a researchable field. I advocate for creativity and performance as a way of researching and discovering new information. Through this lens of embodied knowledge I explore methods of communicating knowledge and expertise already in existence such as through lived experience of people, or that which is alternatively upheld in academic discourse and literature.
